Following graduation from the Georgetown University Law Center, Deborah B. McGregor engaged in private practice in Boulder, Colorado, focusing primarily in the area of probate law and estate planning. Thereafter, she taught legal writing for three years at the Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington before joining the law school faculty in Indianapolis in 1989. In 1990, she developed and ran an academic support program, which ran through 2003. In 1991 Professor McGregor was appointed assistant director of the legal writing program. In 1992 Professor McGregor became the first legal writing professor to receive the student bar association's Best New Teacher’s Award. She has received the Black Law Student Association’s John Morton-Finney/Brenda Elise Bowles Award twice, the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award twice, and the Indiana University Trustee’s Teaching Award.
Professor McGregor has been an active participant in the national Legal Writing Institute (LWI), presenting at both national and regional conferences over the last eighteen years. IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law hosted LWI’s Biennial Conference in 2008, and Professor McGregor served as the Site Chair for that conference, which brought in approximately 600 professors from throughout the United States and Canada. Professor McGregor also served on the LWI Conference Program Committee for the 2008 conference and was a member of the 2010 Site Planning Committee. She is also a member of LWI’s Bar Outreach Committee and has served on its survey committee. She was a member of the Association of Legal Writing Directors’ Fellowships Program Committee and is presently a member of the Committee on Global Legal Writing Programs, serving on the Subcommittee on Teaching Outside the United States.
Professor McGregor co-authored The International Lawyer’s Guide to Legal Analysis and Communication in the United States, published in 2008 by Kluwer Law International/Aspen Publishers, Inc.
