July 2025 Installation Luncheon and Awards

The Indiana Paralegal Association, Inc. (“IPA”) held its annual swearing in and awards ceremony at the Skyline Club on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The featured guest speaker was Magistrate Judge Terrance Tharpe of the Marion County Superior Court, who honored the newly elected IPA officers and directors by conducting the installation ceremony.

The officers and directors of the IPA serve on the Board of Directors. The Board consists of four (4) officers and six (6) directors. These ten (10) professionals volunteer their time to serve a one-year term. During their term, the officers and directors swear to represent the interest of IPA’s membership to the best of their skills and abilities. The newly elected officers and directors are as follows:

Each year, the IPA presents awards to honor its members who have displayed exceptional abilities and who put their many virtues to work to better the organization. Five (5) awards were presented at the ceremony this year. The awards and recipients are as follows:

In response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and with the understanding that notarization is an essential component of business and personal transactions, Governor Eric J. Holcomb, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, the Indiana State Bar Association, and key stakeholders are working diligently to expedite the implementation of remote notarization in the State of Indiana. Remote notarization was previously scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2020. The administrative rules will now go into effect March 31, 2020 along with the statutory authority to perform remote notarizations. (75 IAC 7 & IC 33-42-17).

Remote Notary Authorization

If you are an active Indiana notary, you may immediately apply to become a remote notary:

A remote notary authorization allows Indiana Notaries Public to perform notarial functions via two-way audio visual communication on an approved vendor platform while signatures are captured on an electronic record.

You must contract with an approved remote technology vendor in order to perform remote notarizations. The Indiana Secretary of State's office is currently working to approve remote technology vendors as soon as possible. Once vendors are approved, they will be posted on Secretary of State’s Business Services homepage.

Next Steps

Complete and submit the below application to INBiz@sos.in.gov.

Complete the Indiana State-Required Remote Notary Education and Exam powered by the National Notary Association (NNA). NNA will provide a certificate of completion. Submit your certificate of completion to INBiz@sos.in.gov. NNA expects the course to be available April 7, 2020.

Receive approval of your application (via INBiz@sos.in.gov) from the Secretary of State’s office. The Remote Technology Vendor will verify your approval with the Secretary of State’s office.

Initiate contact with a remote technology vendor.

Here is some exciting news for the Members of the IPA!

Each voting member will now be entitled to two (2) FREE hours of CLE attendance each year with your membership renewal (effective as of July 1, 2016).

Associate Members and Student Members will receive one (1) free hour.

Each hour of CLE is now valued at $25.00 (YES, we reduced the price from $35 per hour to $25 per hour), so this added benefit provides voting members with $50.00 worth of credit toward CLEs at no cost when you renew your membership ($25 credit for associate and student members).

The two (2) hours of free CLEs may be used as follows:

2 – One hour morning CLEs (also a new addition to our CLE calendar – the first one is coming up in early 2017 so watch for the announcement)
1 – Afternoon CLE (from 3p – 5p)
$50 credit toward one Full Day CLE
$50 credit toward one Half Day CLE

PCCI and PACE Online Review Courses begin June 20, 2016

The next API Review Courses begin June 20, 2016. These review courses will assist paralegals in preparing to take the PCCE and PACE. The online review courses run for seven weeks plus a brief pre-course orientation to familiarize students with the website and the First Class platform used by API.

API courses are taught through computer-mediated distance learning. Students may communicate with instructors or classmates around the clock from their home or office computer.

National Paralegal Reporter Available Now Electronically

This is an electronic only version of the National Paralegal Reporter. No hard copy will be mailed to you. NFPA is committed to paralegal involvement in pro bono services, and the delegates have adopted pro bono related agenda topics since 1979. In 1999, NFPA's Model Code of Ethics was amended to include a 24-hour annual pro bono aspiration. The most recent resolution, passed in 2006, created a program to acknowledge and recognize the endeavors and contributions that paralegals make toward community service projects, and further amended the Model Code to include a 24-hour annual community service aspiration. Edna is an active voting member of the Indiana Paralegal Association and has been actively involved in the paralegal profession for over 30 years. NFPA is proud to announce the essay topic for the 2013 NFPA/Thomson Reuters scholarships is now available at http://www.paralegals.org/uploads/TR_Scholarship_app_2013.pdf with the Application form. There are two scholarships available: first place is $3,000 and second place is $2,000.

This scholarship opportunity is open to both member and non-member students of NFPA. The deadline for submission of completed applications and accompanying documents is July 1, 2013. Winners will be provided a travel stipend to attend the NFPA Annual Convention in Hartford, CT in October and will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday, October 5. Notification will be provided to the winners on or about August 26, 2013.

2012-2013 PACE STUDY GROUP FORMING

November 27, 2012-January 15, 2013

One of many ways that you can study for PACE is to consider participating in a Study Group. This method of study certainly has many advantages, the primary advantage being that you can learn from one another, especially regarding areas of the law in which you need more study. You can glean the knowledge of other experienced paralegals in areas in which you have less experience ~ turn your weaknesses into strengths in a fun and positive environment ~ and they can learn from you. Everyone benefits ~ helping each other in achieving their goal ~ to pass PACE.

Not only can members learn together, marshal resources, and motivate one another, but they may be able to reinforce discipline and help the members stay focused. Group study can be more interesting than studying alone, and it allows the members to share their learning experiences. The group can be a sounding board in proof that "two heads are better than one.” They bring to the table each individual member's professional and personal knowledge and experience. Moreover, the group can utilize various media formats that may be unavailable in individual study. Finally, the group is there for support before, during, and after the exam.

PCCE and PACE Online Review Courses Start Monday, October 15^th.

Each course runs for seven weeks and covers all domains for each of the certification exams. The cost for either the PCCE or the PACE review course is $395. At the conclusion of both students will complete an exit exam and each students will receive a score and an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses so that they will know where to focus their final preparation for the exams.

The next start date for both review courses is Monday, November 26^th. Additional courses may be added if sufficient interest is expressed.

ISBA President C. Erik Chickedantz, Fort Wayne, is a partner at the firm Hawk Haynie Kammeyer & Chickedantz. Since 1972, he has practiced law in Fort Wayne, concentrating in the areas of personal injury, commercial, construction and insurance defense litigation and, during the past several years, mediation and arbitration. He received his B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1963 and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1971. Erik served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, 1963-69, which included duty tours with the 101st Airborne Division, Vietnamese Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division.

He is a member of the Allen County (past president), Indiana State (president-elect, 2010-11; vice president, 2009-10; chair, House of Delegates, 2007-08; district member, board of governors, 2001-03; secretary, 1999-2000) and American bar associations; Benjamin Harrison American Inn of Court (past president); Indiana Bar Foundation (member, board of directors); and Allen County Bar Foundation (member, board of directors).

Erik was born in Washington, Ind., in 1941. Erik and his wife, Anita, have four grown children, Julie, Jon, Andy and Jill; a son-in-law, Brian Risley; and two granddaughters, Ali and Leah.

Keith Berlin is an associate at Taft Stettinius & Hollister. He started his career at Taft and has been practicing for four years. Mr. Berlin focuses his practice on complex commercial and environmental litigation. He has been on the Indianapolis Bar Association's Pro Bono Standing Committee for three years and is in his first year as serving as chair of the committee. The IndyBar's Pro Bono Standing Committee promotes equal justice by developing, facilitating, coordinating, supporting, and improving IndyBar's programs and services designed to serve the legal needs of disadvantaged residents of the City of Indianapolis and its surrounding communities while providing opportunities for IndyBar members to fulfill their professional duty and personal responsibility to provide pro bono services to those in need.

LaDonna Wattley is a Volunteer Director at Child Advocates. She made a famous training video called “Big Mama's Chair: Getting from the Company Furniture to the Kitchen Table.” Anyone who has been able to see the full version of this training can tell you its not only educational and informative but full of laughter and fun. Highly recommended!

Dennis Frick is a Director of the Senior Law Project of Indiana Legal Services, Inc. He has represented Medicaid clients in administrative appeals, rule-making hearings, and in state and federal court. NFPA Rolls Out New Website - 6/1/12

The new NFPA website is a complete redesign. Here are some highlights:

Reorganized menus make it easier to find topics
Image links for the most popular topics appear in a column on the left of every page
Many content sections have been restructured and condensed
Explanations for jargon and confusing terms have been added
Old information has been either updated or eliminated
Duplicate and conflicting information reconciled
We designed for both the technology of today and tomorrow:
The new site will expand to utilize all the screen real-estate you have available so you don’t need to scroll as much
For smaller displays such as smartphones and some netbooks, the site will prioritize the main content area – making the site usable even on the go
Announcements and upcoming events columns on the home page will also show members-only information so there is no need to navigate to a special members-only page to see them (the menu bar will have additional links based on the visitor’s permissions)
The members-only content on the old site was hidden behind a single password that was shared by the entire membership – hardly secure - now, each member signs in using the email address they have given to their association
The leaders-only content was behind a password shared by nearly 200 people - the site uses the Leadership Directory database to determine whether that individual gets leadership access in addition to their member access
For leaders, the leaders2 listserv is being replaced with a web-based message system - in addition to receiving announcements in email, you will also be able to look back on past messages using a special page of the website
Behind the scenes, there are many ways the new website design will help NFPA HQ be better able to serve you and many more additions will be worked on over the summer.

Moreover, the new site’s technological underpinnings have a greater capacity for expansion. We will be able to add new features and enhance existing ones using HQ resources, not expensive web design firms. We feel that what we are unveiling is great in its own right, but more than that, we see it as a foundation to build upon for even more member value in the future.

Members: If you’re having difficulty signing in please call HQ at 425-967-0045 to verify we have the correct email address for you. Individuals should also set their preferences regarding the broadcast NFPA e-mails, whether or not to receive a paper or online copy of the National Paralegal Reporter, and/or how their entry in the Leadership Directory, if they have one, should appear. Associations should also continually update the Leadership Directory as to Board members so that the Leadership Directory is - at all times - up-to-date.

It’s here! The application for the PCC Exam will be live on the NFPA website (www.paralegals.org) at 9 a.m. EST Monday, October 31st. Be sure to review carefully review the updated Candidate Handbook before applying.

The PCC Exam will be available at Prometric Testing Centers starting Monday, November 14th. Approved candidates may schedule an exam date and time best for their schedule for any time after November 14th that the center has an available seat. The exam must be taken within 90 days of the date of the Approval to Test email.

IndyBar Looking for Paralegal Members to Volunteer for Ask A Lawyer Event October 11, 2011

If you are looking for a fabulous program to donate some time--have I got the program for you!!

The IndyBar's Ask A Lawyer on Tuesday, October 11, has some openings for a paralegal to act as a site coordinator at various Marion County Public Libraries. Responsibilities include distributing/posting marketing materials a week in advance, confirming logistics with the librarian, managing attorney volunteers and the public on the day of the event. Following the event, you will tally some statistics, and return all leftover materials to the IndyBar office.

The event will be held on Tuesday, October 11, from 2pm-6pm. You will need to arrive at your site no later than 1:45pm and will most likely leave no later than 6:15pm. You will have (3) attorney volunteers to help from 2pm-4pm and another (3) from 4pm-6pm.

All volunteers must be IndyBar members.

As a member association of NFPA, IPA has one vote on all policy matters of the NFPA at the Annual Convention. A 2/3 vote is necessary to establish the policy. As Primary Representative, it is my duty to act as your liaison and be your voice at the Convention. To adequately represent you, your input is required on all agenda topics. My vote on your behalf depends on the majority opinion of IPA’s membership. Attached you will find the Ballot Angela and I have prepared with a synopsis of each agenda item as well as a recommendation for each topic. You may ask any questions you wish, you may receive the full agenda topics upon request (1 or all) and you have the opportunity to send your ballot to me where you may vote for or against each agenda topic as you believe to be in the best interests of IPA and the paralegal profession. Become a School Education Advocate to Effect Positive Social Change!

Did you know that approximately 75% of foster children in the United States are behind grade level? Did you know that 67% of foster children will be suspended from school, and foster youth are twice as likely to drop out of school? Did you also know that these poor educational outcomes can have long-lasting societal impacts, as 22% of former foster youth experience homelessness and 17% receive some form of public assistance? Did you know that many former foster youth spend time incarcerated, and the unemployment rate for former foster youth tops 50%? Do you wonder what you can do personally to combat these poor educational outcomes by ensuring that foster children have the resources, support, and opportunities they need for a healthy and productive future?

On September 14, 2011, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., the IndyBar School Education Advocacy Program will host a training in collaboration with FosterEd: Marion County. The program is intended for attorneys, law students, and paralegals interested in supporting the educational success of children with special needs through lay advocacy. The training will introduce the agencies, procedures and processes a volunteer will encounter when advocating for a child with special educational needs. Education law and entitlement programs and rights will briefly be covered. Volunteers will then be asked whether they would like to be added to FosterEd’s list of trained Education Advocates available to be paired with a foster child living in Marion County who has unmet special education needs. In other words, simply attending the training does not obligate you to do anything further!

Education Advocates will be asked to secure appropriate educational opportunities by building the capacity of the student, family, and caregiver through collaboration with the school system. The commitment is flexible, depending on the issues at hand, but you should expect to spend at least a couple hours per week until the issues are resolved; some weeks will be more, some less. This is an excellent opportunity for paralegals and law students to hone their communications skills, learn about special education law, be introduced to one of the myriad IndyBar pro bono projects, and have a real, positive impact on your community!

A complimentary live training will be held on Wednesday, September 14, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the IndyBar, 135 North Pennsylvania Street, Ste 1500. For those who cannot attend the live training, DVD's will be available for check-out through the IndyBar. Please register for the training at www.indybar.org. Program volunteers must be members of the Indianapolis Bar Association (membership applications are also available at www.indybar.org) CLE will not be offered.

Indianapolis, Indiana – July 2011 – The Indiana Paralegal Association, Inc. (“IPA”) held its annual swearing in and awards ceremony at the Columbia Club on Wednesday, July 20. Featured guest, Jeffry A. Lind, President of the Indiana State Bar Association, provided the IPA with the honor of conducting the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected officers and directors.

NFPA is seeking candidates to fill the following positions on the Ethics Board, for terms to begin on August 1, 2011:

NFPA voting Members: 2 positions Both are one-year terms

The duties and responsibilities of Ethics Board members are set forth in the Procedures Manual, Section 10.0E, as copied below:

10.0E   DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
NFPA may be asked to provide its opinion or interpretation of the NFPA Model Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, the NFPA Model Disciplinary Rules and respond to related inquires from members, paralegal non-members, and other individuals and entities. The general charges of the Ethics Board are twofold.
          1.   The Ethics Board shall respond to questions and matters involving ethical conduct, obligations, utilization and/or discipline of paralegals
          2.   The Ethics Board shall identify and respond to ethical issues on which interpretations or advice should be generated.

The procedures for selection are set forth in the Procedures Manual, Section 10.0C, a copy of which is set forth below:

10.0C PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION:    Any individual interested in appointment to the Ethics Board should provide a resume and letter of interest to the Vice President and Director of Position and Issues. It is recommended that non-NFPA members have demonstrated expertise in the area of ethics through published works, teaching experience, or other activities. It is recommended that NFPA members have a minimum of five years experience as a paralegal as well as demonstrated activities in or knowledge of ethics and NFPA positions. NFPA members must be voting members.

The deadline for letters of interest and resumes is Friday, July 8, 2011. Letters of interest and resumes should be sent to the Vice President and Director of Positions and Issues at VPPI@paralegals.org. Please indicate in your letter of interest whether you are interested in a one-year term, a two-year term, or either term. The NFPA Board will make these appointments at the Summer Board meeting on July 23, 2011.

NFPA requests participation in survey on exempt/non-exempt status of paralegals deadline is June 8, 2011

At the 2010 NFPA Convention, the delegates established an ad hoc committee to explore the possibility of changing the Department of Labor’s definition/designation of exempt/non-exempt status of paralegals. The committee is working hard on this research. As part of this research, they have developed the attached very brief survey (6 questions and a comment section). In order to assist the committee, it would be greatly appreciated it if you took a couple minutes to complete the survey. We also ask that you please forward this survey to members of your association so that they may participate. All those who complete the survey have the chance to enter their name into a drawing for a $25 gift card. The Indiana Attorney General's Office, in conjunction with the Indiana Bankers Association, is offering FREE webinar training sessions to help educate Hoosiers about identity theft in efforts of reducing the spread of this crime in our state. Participants of this free online training course will gain:

An understanding of how the crime occurs to help thwart threats
Insight on ways ID thieves use the evolving technological landscape and other methods to perpetrate the crime
Techniques for spotting red flags and practical tips to avoid falling prey to them
The tools and knowledge to educate others about identity theft prevention

Identity theft takes on many forms, affecting victims with more than just financial loss. In some cases, victims have lost out on job opportunities or the approval of loans for cars, education or housing. In rare cases, they have even been arrested for crimes they did not commit. Victims of medical identity theft may have erroneous patient data – that of the identity thief – in their medical records. The crime is widespread because the thieves are becoming savvier with the ways they collect and use personal information to commit crimes in victim's names. That is why it is critical to stay educated on this topic.

Spread the word, not the crime

Participants of the identity theft training course will gain the knowledge and tools to help educate others about the prevention of this crime. You are encouraged to share the information you learn in this training program with friends, family or other members of your community. This can be accomplished with educational workshops, publishing information in newsletters or other mailings within your organization/affiliations, or by sharing helpful prevention tips or links to this web page via email or social networking sites.

The Indiana Paralegal Association, (“IPA”) gives annual awards to honor its members. Awards are given in the following categories: Paralegal of the Year, New Member Paralegal of the Year, Outstanding Board Member of the Year, and from time to time, a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Paralegal of the Year Award has traditionally been IPA’s most distinguished award, because it is given to a member of IPA who has demonstrated exceptional loyalty and commitment to the betterment of IPA, and is recognized as being the most valued, the most respected and the most deserving of IPA members to earn this sterling reputation.

The New Member Paralegal of the Year Award is given to an outstanding new member of IPA. Although a member less than three years, the recipient of this award quickly rises to the top of leadership and commitment to IPA.

The Outstanding Board Member of the Year Award is given to recognize an outstanding member of IPA’s Board of Directors. Board members work tirelessly in their already hectic schedules to serve the needs of its paralegal members, to educate the public and promote the paralegal profession. This award is nominated and chosen by the IPA’s Board of Directors.

The IPA Board decided that there were a few paralegals that have truly pioneered the paralegal profession and stayed through it evolution for many years. To recognize the achievements of such an individual, the Board decided that from time to time when appropriate they would award a Lifetime Achievement Award.

NFPA Moves Forward with the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (PCCE)

I am very pleased to announce that the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (PCCE) Candidate Handbook and online registration for the Saturday, June 11, 2011 pilot test are now available at www.paralegals.org The pilot test will be held at 12 locations across the country. Seating at each test site is limited so if you are eligible and want to take advantage of the reduced fee, register early. The fee for the pilot test is $65. Please be sure to review the candidate handbook thoroughly before initiating the online registration.

The pilot test is a paper/pencil version of the exam and will be hand scored. Scores will be released by PES no later than August 1, 2011. Candidates who successfully pass the exam will earn the CORE Registered Paralegal (CRP) credential.

IPA Accepting Nominations for PACE Ambassador

Due to the resignation of the Indiana Paralegal Association (“IPA”) PACE Ambassador, this Section Chair position is now open. If you are interested in filling this position,please notify me by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011.

The Pace Ambassador must be an RP and duties generally include promoting the PACE Exam for the experienced paralegal, and the upcoming PCC exam for newer paralegals, along with promoting the professionalism of paralegals. The ambassador should be willing to assist others in setting up study groups and helping with the entire process of becoming an RP. This will also include public congratulatory recognition of new RPs.

IPA will be sending the new PACE Ambassador to a training conference on Saturday afternoon, April 30 and Sunday morning May 1st in Cleveland, OH.

NFPA 2011 Scholarship Announcement

It's that time again -- NFPA is happy to announce that the 2011 Thomson Reuters' Scholarship Application is available at http://www.paralegals.org/associations/2270/files/2011content/2011_Thomson_Reuters_Scholarship_Application.pdf

This year's essay topic is:
“The economy has had a strong impact on the practice of law. As a paralegal student, who will soon be graduating, describe the current legal job market in your community, and how your paralegal education can give you an advantage in securing paralegal employment.”

The scholarships are $3,000 and $2,000, and include a stipend for the winners to travel to the 2011 Annual Convention to be personally recognized by NFPA and Thomson.

Free Seminar on E-Discovery March 17, 2011

Edenhub.com, an online vehicle for coordinating a national community of professionals involved in e-discovery, wants NFPA members to know about a free online webinar: Elements of Electronic Discovery, on March 17, 2011, at 4 pm Eastern, 3 pm Central, 2 pm Mountain and 1 pm Pacific. This program is approved by the Washington State Bar Association for 1 hour of CLE credit; therefore RPs do not need to submit to the NFPA CLE coordinator for approval.

Spring Meeting of Family Law Section is Open to All IPA Members

The Spring Meeting of the Family Law Section will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, beginning promptly at 3:00 p.m., at the Hamilton County Courthouse, Court Administration Office on the 3^rd Floor. The Honorable William J. Hughes has graciously agreed to provide us with a tour of the courthouse and will speak to us in the historic courtroom to discuss such things as what he looks for as a judge in Marital Settlement Agreements, Financial Declarations, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, as well as modifications.

You are welcome to invite your supervising attorney(s) to attend with you. However, registration is on a first come-first serve basis through the IPA website. Please note that registration will be limited to 30 attendees and will close on March 8th, so please register as soon as possible.
